Owner's Comments
Looking at the yachts Bill Dixon currently designs one can see the inspired architecture that was promised by the Warrior 38, the first boat he drew up. The Warrior displays a masterful use of space that prompts every visitor to say “surely this must be more than thirty eight feet”! “Ailsa J” is the forty-ninth and last of this class to be built.
When I was looking for a vessel with which to circumnavigate, I had some tough requirements. The yacht must meet CCA criteria for a seaworthy boat and be easily managed when short handed. Additionally the vessel must be comfortable with a full size galley, great entertaining saloon, separate step in shower, large double berths and six foot plus headroom throughout…the Warrior 38 is all these things and more. “Ailsa J” is fully equipped for secure, fast ocean passages and equally ready for island hopping in comfort.
We did a world circumnavigation 1995 / 2003 with crew numbers varying between one and five and a Second Atlantic crossing 2003 / 2004. How does she sail under a variety of conditions? Ailsa J ghosts or romps with equal surety How is she balanced? Perfectly balanced she made one six day run in the Indian Ocean with the Hydrovane steering and required adjustments to absolutely nothing during the whole period. How does she manoeuvre under sail and power? In a deft and confidence winning manner Is she controllable going astern? Absolutely What is a reasonable cruising speed under sail – and power? Passage planning on the basis of 6 knots under sail is frequently pessimistic. She cruises comfortably at 6 knots under power with 7 knots being maximum speed (under power). What is she like in heavy weather? Even the most timorous of sailors have stepped ashore after a heavy passage and remarked on how secure they had felt What is she like for entertaining? The spacious uncluttered deck allows for comfortable lounging and sunbathing and the swim ladder is handy after cooling off. The cockpit accepts eight with ease for cocktails. Below, the large saloon and table with access at both ends make for elegant dinner parties. What is she like for kids? Room to run everywhere and the lockable nav room door removes the temptation of all those shiny knobs and buttons. Work done in my ownershipNew teak laid on deck and in cockpit in 1994 |
