Sails and Deck Gear

The two masts are hewn from locally cut Douglas Fir trees.

The bowsprit, outrigger and yards are laminated Douglas Fir to give them more rigidity in their smaller sections.

The iron work for the rig is all custom made by the Morwellham blacksmith and galvanised. All structural joints are arc welded for extra strength. The metal work is another particular feature of the Alert.

The lug rig requires a minimum of rigging. The running rigging is of three strand hemp style polyester rove through Ash blocks.

Galvanised standing rigging.

The suit of sails are in tanned clipper canvas (a synthetic flax) traditionally made and finished with hand sewn bolt rope and reefing points by the well known James Lawrence Sailmakers.

The working rig comprises jib, fore sail, mizzen.

This gives a sail area of 1150 square feet.

For those wanting to race a staysail is an optional extra. For those wanting to cruise long distance a small jib and second small mizzen are optional extras.
