Designed "in house" and built by Berthons, the Gauntlet class can truly be described as a "classic" sailing yacht. Of strong construction and with excellent performance under sail the Gauntlet proved ideal for long distance passage making and indeed a considerable number of such voyages were undertaken.
"Ame", previously "Lady Emma Hamilton" and "Gemini" has been in current ownership 2003, her previous owner living on her since 1995. During that time she enjoyed over £20,000 being spent on materials, fittings and upgrading of equipment. Works included: new Teak deck, renewal of all cockpit brightwork and sole, new main cabin sole in Mahogany, chart table in Teak and all interior main cabin bulkheads being faced in 4mm thick solid Mahogany boards. The engine was removed and professionally rebuilt. She was rigged to suit shorthanded sailing.
That owner sailed her from Penzance to the Azores where she cruised the Islands and then made passage to the Canaries via Madeira and Porto Santo where she spent three years. During those passages she encountered full and severe gales with her owner commenting that `her performance at no time gave him any cause for concern'. |
