"Amokura", Moody Yawl Lying Hamble

| Owner's Comments
Our family had previously owned another yacht designed by Fred Shepherd, ALINE 4. ALINE was a beautifully designed boat and built to a very high specification in 1919. She was fast compared to some of the other boats we had owned (7 1/2 hours Needles to Cherbourg harbour entrance). However she had a low freeboard which made her a wet boat. So, when we saw Amokura, she still had the same lovely lines but was just that bit bigger which would solve all ALINE's problems; and so it proved.
We did out own delivery from Palma to the Hamble with a crew of four. When we had favourable wind she sailed beautifully and she behaved like a star through a gale. Her decks did not get wet past the cockpit and the bilges remained dry. When there wasn't any wind, or it was from the wrong direction, the 85 hp engine produced a good 6 knots.
The layout below makes her a very comfortable home, and her sea keeping qualities will take her crew safely across any sea. If time and money permitted we might have taken the Horn! She's quite capable.
Sadly my health has deteriorated too far to keep her (including a spell in a French Hospital. We have taken part in one race, and may have done a few more by the time that she is sold. Her age allowance gives her an outstanding rating (0.934)
Owning her for just a year has been a real privilege that will never be forgotten. |
