Practical Boat Owner

Probably the best second-hand boat you've never heard of...
.....The Varne in contrast was a revelation: beautifully balanced, close-winded and with a motion that would rock you gently to sleep. She was clearly designed for the kind of weather most people try and avoid. Sadly such good old-fashioned qualities have largely fallen by the wayside, displaced by modern obsessions like creature comforts in a marina berth.

Of course, generous overhangs and fine bows have long been unfashionable - and may indeed be considered impractical by many - but they soften the ride on a day like this. In fact, until you try it in something like the Varne, it's easy to forget that beating into a Force 6 can actually be fun. In any event, there's no escaping the fact that the Varne is a Premier League performer - even if she is not widely known.

Owner's Comments

I bought Blythe Avocet because I wanted a swift, safe boat for coastal cruising. She is all of that - I usually sailed with two others on board and found her good both under sail and power - even going astern. We usually could cruise at 6 knots under sail and 6.5 knots under power. She is very good in heavy weather.
