Owner's Comments
Boojum is a boat of complete provenance with original registration certificate documenting all owners. Weighing 22 ton she has a reassuring steadiness and the feeling of a big yacht. In 2001 she under went restoration. Bulwarks were reconstructed in teak as was the dog house. The sheathing on the hull was stripped back for inspection and the hull planking was found to be in good condition, the garboard planks were refastened splined and recaulked and then re sheathed, keel bolts were dropped and found to be in Perfect condition. All frames were found to be in good condition most have been sistered with laminated oak frames at some point and the stringers have been replaced also with laminated oak making the hull incredibly strong !! All standing rigging was replaced with Galvanised steel A new top mast and bow sprit were made from pitch pine. The mast boom and gaff proved to be in good condition once the surface moss had been removed! The engine was rebuilt although It really could be replaced with a modern, more compact unit. The interior has been reconstructed in teak and mahogany with some Victorian yellow pine there is still however a small amount of interior reconstruction required were plywood has been used in the interim.
Boojum is a comforting boat in heavy weather but as she has a fine entry she will take some spray over the bow in big seas. She is a good boat for entertaining as she has big flat decks that accommodate a small crowd. As there is only one winch on the boat, a strong crew is recommended for sailing her hard although I can happily single hand her give enough sea room. Typically of this weight of long keeled yacht she is not the most manoeuvrable but she does predictably kick to port, which you can use to your advantage, she will steer astern in neutral or tick over. I have mainly used the boat for cruising the west coast of Scotland and Ireland where she is well known and loved. |
