Delfino is a Bermudan Ketch built in 1939 by Oscar Cavagna, for the Mayor of Trieste, Lawyer Cesare Paganini, to a John Alden design. After World War II she was owned by a major Company of Trieste, Magazzini Generali, and to Sir Terence Airey, Commander and Military Governor of the Anglo-American Zone there.
During this period she was used by the famous Yacht Club Adriaco. Eventually, Delfino belonged to the Bruni Brunners before coming to the current owner's family. In previous ownership Delfino underwent a huge restoration and refit which started in 1993 and ended at the Cantiere Alto Adriatico in Monfalcone in cooperation with the famous architect Carlo Sciarrelli.
It was, indeed, Sciarrelli himself who recognized the yacht while in the shipyard and found an old photo, above, through which he redesigned the rig taking it back to the original Ketch rig with a 2m long bowsprit.
Studio Faggioni was appointed to redesign the interior. Faggioni tried and create a new layout in keeping with the 40s style, as there were no photos of the original interiors. During the refit the hull was found pretty sound and nothing was changed, although the cement ballast in the keel put in by the former owner was totally removed to bring Delfino to the original weight and speed. A new engine was fitted together with a new watermaker. The old generator was removed. New Pitch Pine masts, booms and bowsprit were made as well as new sails (by Zaoli-Sanremo Italy). New rigging was made, taking away the old pulpit forward and aft in order to give her a lighter profile Harken was contacted to provide her new-style bronze winches expressly made for Delfino.
A new teak deck was put all around the original superstructure which still has the original brass portholes while hatches were made new. She was relaunched in August 2006 and within a year won two Best Refit awards, one at the Barcelona Race and one at the Naval Academy of Livorno-Italy. After Launch in 2006 she made her first cruise in Croatia in Summer 2006. Then, in winter 2006-7 she went back to the Cantieri dell Alto Adriatico for the necessary check-up after her first season. Her final test was proven by a comprehensive season in 2007, starting in May with a tour of Italy from Trieste to Naples. There she were hosted by the Savoia Royal Yacht Club, before heading to Argentario in order to take part at the Argentario Classic Week.
During the regatta, although she was not designed as a racing boat, and she had to compete with fast yachts such as Sirius, Cholita and Peter, she proudly won a match-race against the French team of Golden Brown. In July August and September she cruised with her owner along the French Riviera from Monaco to St. Tropez, awakening the interest of the tourists, a bit bored by the mega-super-awful-yachts of the Cote d'Azur. |
