Don Jose

Owner's Comments
Don José is a beautiful, unique yacht. She was built under commission out of a single Brazilian hardwood Cedar tree that was seasoned for 13 years before work began. Launched in 1982 on the River Plate in Argentina, she was designed to be the ultimate wooden yacht and is built to the highest possible standards. She is end for end planked with no Butt straps, tight seamed, with no caulking. She has both steamed and laminated frames, and is bronze fastened throughout; stability being provided by a 3.6 tonnes lead fin keel.
Designed as a fast, comfortable cruiser, no expense was spared in her construction and most of the fixtures and fittings were hand or purpose built in stainless steel for the boat. She has recently undergone a full overhaul, including decks, engine, interior and exterior bright-work and is now ready for the next exciting chapter in her history. Don José is a proven ocean going yacht. She has sailed the South Atlantic, Caribbean, North Atlantic, Mediterranean, Biscay and the English Channel. Having personally experienced gale force winds and mountainous seas in Finnistere, she has proved her ability to provide a safe passage in the most trying of conditions.
We discovered Don José in southern Spain and instantly fell in love! Wooden boats have a character all of their own and she felt strong and dependable – the ideal boat for fast cruising and family fun. The last 12 years has seen our children grow from new borns, to 10 and 8 year olds and both children have spent many happy days cruising the Channel Islands and French coast, initially strapped into their car seats in the cockpit and latterly roaming the decks in harnesses. It will be a wrench to part with such a cherished member of our family but we feel increasingly that our current work commitments leave us with less and less time to enjoy this special boat. Having always felt that a wooden boat is a living legacy that needs to be used, we acknowledge, as her current custodians, that the time has come for Don José to be passed on to new owners who will open up the next phase in her life. We know that she will take care of them just as she has us! |
