Carvel Folkboat, Helios

Helios was built in 1962 by John Perry in Cosham. John is one of the UKs best boat builders and his boats are renowned for the quality of materials and craftsmanship. Helios is planked in full length African mahogany called Afzelia which John says is as good as Honduras. The topsides are splined and the planking is full length. The bottom was burnt off in 2007 and no evidence of damage or repaired planking was uncovered. The underwater hull is so tight that the vessel takes negligible water when moored and similarly when sailed. The ribs are Canadian rock elm and all are intact and there are no sister ribs. The floors are English oak replaced in a renovation in 1998 as was the deck which is epoxy sheathed. The keel bolts were also replaced in 1998. (Receipts available)
The coach roof and coamings are also in Afzelia. There is a stainless steel push pit and pulpit and stainless steel stanchions with guard wires. A replacement low profile Lewmar hatch and new plinth was fitted in 2005.
The rudder was replaced in 2002 at a cost of 2890. A new laminated tiller was fitted at the same time. The cockpit has a teak grating to the floor and teak cockpit seats, there is s small stern locker. A new spray hood was made in 2005 as was a cockpit cover.

The cockpit, port side, was rebuilt 2012. Engine refurbished and new service battery fitted 2012.

Folkboats are well known for their excellent sailing  characteristics and Helios is no exception the sails are superb and drive the yacht to her full potential, there is never any pressure on the helm and the sails can be reefed from the cockpit. Helios is a beautiful elegant yacht and draws admiration wherever she goes.

I have used Helios for local leisure trips but unfortunately not as much as I would have liked.

She is comfortable, well balanced and stable in all conditions and regularly cruises at 5 knots. Unfortunately, for personal reasons, I have not been able to use her enough and have decided to sell her - she will be missed.

Helios is due to be brought ashore at St Mawes by the end of October. It might be possible for the Owner to pick up potential buyers from either Truro or St Austell railway stations.
