Sails and Deck Gear

Owner's Comments

I purchased Jims from the builder, Ian Elkins, now retired, the owner of the Elkins Shipyard, Christchurch.

“JIMS” was the first boat built by the yard after Ian took over from his father in 1963 and she was started in order to give the men something to do whilst he looked for new business. The orders quickly came in and it was sometime before “JIMS” could be completed! Ian kept the boat for himself and his family, the name being formed from the initials of his four children.

She had been little used by the family and, when I found her, had been stored for 17 years in Ian’s garage. At rather more than 70 he had finally decided that he was not going to sail her again, and the family had all grown up and moved away. Other than a very dusty interior the original varnish is as seen today, and all timbers, planks, fastenings etc in the interior were found sound and in excellent condition.

The deck and hull varnish above the waterline were tired, so taken back to bare wood and re-varnished with five coats of Epifanes varnish. All Spars & rudder were also re-varnished.

To meet local requirements for racing, buoyancy was fitted in 2008. The aft buoyancy (closed cell foam) is removable, all be it a bit of a jigsaw. The sails are generally in good sound condition, but they are original 1963 Terylene suitable for day cruising. New stainless steel shackles replaced the original galvanised. A removable tabernacle is available to aid hoisting the mast by two persons.

I have used her for day sailing and classic racing. She is light on the helm, easy to handle and ideal for family sailing.

I have now bought a gaffer so she is sadly for sale.
