Minim was built by her owner to a design by Laurent Giles and launched
in 1998. Construction is clinker epoxy ply. Decks and superstructure
are also epoxy ply. There are two berths, a chemical loo and a 3.9hp
Yamaha Malta outboard motor.
The design is based on the original
Sopranino sailed by Patrick Ellam and Colin Mudie which inspired the
formation of the Junior Offshore Group (JOG), midget, lightweight, cruiser
racers that regularly raced to France and back. Sopranino was
sailed by Ellam and Mudie alongside the RORC's Santander race fleet
arriving only a few hours after the cream of the fleet.
Shortly
later, to prove their confidence in the design, Colin Mudie, who was a
design assistant in the Laurent Giles office sailed as crew on Sopranino
with Ellam down to La Coruna, across to Las Palmas, over to the Caribbean
and then up to New York!
This adventure was the
subject of a book written by Patrick Ellam and Colin Mudie. The
owner of Minim found this book in a second hand bookshop in the mid 1990s
and was inspired to build one! The Barchetta design is a slightly
modified Sopranino.
