Dog House
When the Volvo MD2 was installed it had to be placed further forward and higher than the original engine, so, to get reasonable headroom above it, the coachroof was raised forming a doghouse. This was re-worked in later refits.
The doghouse provides a safe, comfortable, and dry position where one can sit and keep watch at sea; something like a sunken pilothouse. Benches on either side fold up to give access to the quarter-berths. Headroom is now around 5ft 9.5ins.
The switch board is to port, visible from the cockpit and far enough forward to be sheltered from spray at sea. Depth sounder and log are mounted so as to be visible from the cockpit. On the aft bulkhead are a number of stowages for items that may be needed from the cockpit: binoculars, sunglasses, hand-bearing compass, main compass when not in use, etc.
On either side of the engine are removable boxes for tool stowage. Access to the drawer for charts that are not in use is behind the water containers.
