Builder's Comments

THE LUKE 5 ton auxiliary Sloop has been designed (by W. L. Hobbs, M.I.N.A., of Port Hamble, Limited) to compare favourably with any other vessel of its size and type. Built by the finest craftsmen in England, we believe that it has no equal.

A study of the full specification and drawings in this folder, better still a thorough examination of one of these superb little yachts, will show that nothing has been left to chance. Built under the special supervision of Lloyds for Class `A' in Lloyds Register of Yachts, the LUKE 5 tonner is all that a thoroughbred should be.

The standard equipment is lavish and comprehensive in every way. Nevertheless, there are many yachtsmen who have their own particular fancies in the way of equipment, and a list of optional extras, with their cost if ordered at the time of building, will be found in this brochure.

The LUKE 5-tonner is not built by mass production methods. It is a craftsman product, and for this reason may be modified to the individual requirements of the prospective owner. The sail plan has been designed for all-round cruising purposes, but such are the sailing qualities of the craft that a greatly increased sail area may be employed if required.

Although many details of this beautiful yacht have been altered and improved since the building of the first prototype, it is significant that the lines of the hull have remained unchanged. Sailed under all conditions of weather the LUKE 5-tonner has proved a delight to handle and a joy to possess. We are proud to present such a fine example of British craftsmanship.

Owner's Comments

The boat, when first seen, was afloat and looking rather dilapidated. But she looked as she would be very attractive as a day / weekend boat once she was restored. Local advice was sought and it was found to have had a history of successful deep-sea passages (Trans Atlantic and European coasts). After living onboard for some time it seemed capable of becoming a reasonable live-aboard over short periods.

She was sailed from Campbeltown to Fairlie, mainly under motor, with 2 persons onboard, one who was very experienced and found her to be an excellent handler.

During the 8 hrs passage, handling was found to be light and responsive considering she has a long keel. Close quarter handling was excellent.

Astern handling was easy with little prop wash

On the passage speed was approx 4 Kts under motor but sailing speed was slow due to the light wind.

Since that passage she has been ashore.

The work carried out on her so far, both by the owner and a professional boat builder has cost more than originally estimated and no further funds are available to complete the project.

The remaining work required on the hull is beyond the owner’s expertise and, due to weather constraints, she should really be put under cover for the external work to be completed. This is not presently available, for various reasons, to the present owner.

Also, after working on her, it is realised that she is probably a bit too small to spend extended periods aboard.
