The Sir Winston Churchill is a 3-masted schooner, designed by Camper
and Nicholson and built by Richard Dunston Ltd in Hessle, Yorkshire in 1966.
She was originally built to respond to the challenge of competing in a Tall Ships race, at a time where no other English vessel existed to enter the race. Under the patronage of the Duke of Edinburgh and with funds of public support, The Sir Winston Churchill was launched in 1996 and used
under the management of the Sail Training Association for sail training.
She participated in races worldwide and won many awards.
She was taken out of service in 2000 to make way for 2 new sail training
ships and was then purchased by her current owner.

She has been sympathetically and carefully refitted to create luxurious
air-conditioned accommodation for up to 12 guests. The sail handling systems have been simplified
with headsail furling and electric winches. However, she still retains her classic good looks and has a real sailing ship feel. During her refit she was thoroughly inspected and ultra
sound tested and no weak areas of structure were found.
She has a steel hull and superstructure. Mechanical power is by twin
Iveco 360 Hp diesel engines (new in 2002). She has a cruising range,
under power, of around 1,000 nautical miles. |
