Snowgoose of Swansea attracted us in the first place for the elegance of her lines and her pedigree. Designed by the famous naval architect Frederick Parker, she was built in 1962 by the prestigious boatyard of Woodnutts of Warsash almost regardless of expense, using the best materials available. When we bought her in 2000 she was in need of a mechanical, electrical and cosmetic refit but her potential was enormous.

Another aspect that appealed to us is the fact that she was built for the sea but is also suited for navigation on inland waterways.

We have tested her seagoing ability on many sea passages including several Channel crossings and longer passages such as Milford Haven to Newlyn and Lowestoft to Zeebrugge. At sea, Snowgoose gives you the feeling of being on a real little ship. Her refurbished original Pinta autopilot combined with all her navigational equipment makes sailing safe and easy. She can take a force 6 and is comfortable in force 4 to 5.

Her dimensions make her equally ideal for inland cruising. Mast down she can go under most bridges and her draught makes navigation possible almost everywhere. Her two engines provide enough power to make handling easy on the largest and busiest of canals and enable manoeuvres in and out of locks to take place smoothly.

All this, we know from experience, having sailed 1500 km of Belgian canals and rivers over two consecutives summers in order to write a guide for Imray (published in 2005 under the title Inland Waterways of Belgium and where Snowgoose is featured, of course). She has also been featured in an issue of Motor Boats Monthly (1996) and in Practical Boat Owner (2001).

Finally and not least, she is so well fitted that she is a pleasure to navigate and to live on board. Her original layout and classic interior have been retained with the addition of the technical features expected of a modern vessel. Ample and well designed storage facilities, including two hanging lockers as well as plenty of headroom throughout the vessel, hot and cold water and a shower, a good cooker, a large fridge-freezer and a washing machine especially designed for the sea make daily life extremely comfortable.

The saloon with its varnished teak double door opening onto the cockpit and its beautifully restored mahogany table looks worthy of a film set, especially at night with all its newly re-chromed lights on, and is a wonderful place for entertaining. One of the design’s advantages is that the galley forms part of the saloon, enabling the hostess to be with her guests at all times.

In addition, unlike many other vessels, Snowgoose has a high and sturdy guardrail which offers entire safety at sea or when mooring up.

At the age of 64 we are planning another venture, sailing across the Atlantic, so we need to sell Snowgoose to buy an ocean going sailing craft. Unfortunately, we cannot afford to keep two boats!
