Owner's Comments
Thalia is craftsman built of Pitchpine and oak planking on oak frames and bronze fastened. The long lead keel fairs to solid timber rudder. Originally built with a centreboard this was removed and sealed at the end of 19th century (108 years ago) and has not sailed with it since! One of the features of Wanhill's techniques was the tapering of the planking from end to end and also the frames, bigger and stronger where needed, were also thinner and lighter towards the top. This kept the weight from the ends of the yacht and also gave immense strength by way of the keel and mast where needed. Three of the twelve yachts racing in the first Americas cup race of 1851 were built by Wanhill; their most successful being Egira built in 1865 who won the Queens Cup in Cowes seven times. Straight stemmed but with a cutaway forefoot, she sails straight and true thanks to the long keel and has an easy motion whether pointing into the waves or running downwind. An intended restoration was started in Bosham in the late 1980's but halted with the deck planking and interior removed when the then owner ran out of money. We bought her in 1993 and spent the following four years rebuilding her, restoring the original interior where possible and re-building in the original manner where not. Previous owners and others provided photographic records to enable faithful reproduction of missing doors and panels; she is not 100% authentic as the current owners decided the Galley was better further aft rather than right forward and, as a result, it can be used when under way!
Thalia is registered with the UK National Maritime museum, as a vessel of historic importance. She has her name on the walls of the Royal Cork Yacht club. From the 1890's: First owner R Foley, commodore of RCYC. We have Racing results from Cork and Dublin (several wins) and original bills of sale from 1918,1920s,1960's.
