Specifications

Thalia is a Classic Gaff Cutter built and designed by G.F. Wanhill of
Poole in 1889. Construction is Pitch Pine and Oak planks onto Oak
frames, bronze fastened. She has undergone a complete restoration
with her shipwright owner who bought her in the early 1990s.
The long lead keel fairs to solid timber rudder. Originally built with
a centreboard this was removed and sealed at the end of 19th century (108
years ago) and has not sailed with it since!
One of the features of Wanhill's techniques was the tapering of the
planking from end to end and also the frames, bigger and stronger where
needed, were also thinner and lighter towards the top. This kept the
weight from the ends of the yacht and also gave immense strength by way of
the keel and mast where needed.
