Timoneer was built in 1968 by Hampers of Fareham, for the late Michael Gibb, whose company made yacht fittings. Her name was given to her by Blondie Hasler. A timoneer was the name given to a helmsman long ago, coming from the French word timonier. Patrick O'Brian refers to the timoneer regularly in the stories of Jack Aubrey.
Construction is mahogany on bent oak frames, the cabin top is teak and the deck marine ply. Much of the deck has been replaced over the years and sheathed with glass mat and West epoxy. The cockpit is varnished teak, mahogany and pitch pine. The ballast keel is iron and all the keelbolts except one were replaced in 1998. The other
was replaced in 1990. (The surveyor's report is inaccurate on this point.)
