Tolly, Colin Archer style Motor Sailer Ketch

Tolly is a Colin Archer style motor sailing ship that has been our family boat for the last 13 years.

During our time with her we have done some major rebuildings (see specifications) to make her become a comfortable sailing ship for our family. A spacious pilot house of solid 1˝” mahogany, where you sit 6 – 8 persons, is well used as a place to relax, listen to music from the stereo and play different family games.

The deck area being as spacy as it is, also gives lots of room for playing on, or perhaps just relax in one of the hammocks hanging there, while on the way or at anchor.
The ketch rig of approx 1,500 sqft sail area, divided into 5 sails, 3 fore sails, 1 main and 1 mizzen, is easily handled by our family. Tolly is a good and well balanced sailor, despite her large beam and kurved hull. You can often leave the steering wheel for a while without risk of loosing the course.

We have sailed her at 8.7 knots in 25 knots of wind with all sails set. It was like riding a steady train with hardly any heeling.

Motoring is another appreciated pleasure, with a very reliable slow paced semi diesel engine, giving a wonderful and relaxing pounding sound that makes everyone you meet turn their head and smile. Where ever we go into port, we meet happy people wanting to help us and to listen to the sound of the engine. In the years we have sailed her, she hasn’t failed once to start and do her job, regardless of conditions.

We have sometimes run by engine for more than 24 hours without any problem what so ever, just the same nice pounding sound all of the time (actually when she was a fishing ship, the fishermen started the engine when leaving for the fishing grounds, and then it was continuously working until they came back a week or more later).

Despite her size she is quite easy handled when mooring, her reversible propeller making it possible to almost “turn on a dime”.

Now our kids are beginning to move out from home, starting in the university etc, and we feel that it’s time for us to start looking for a more suitable boat for just the two of us.

Tolly has done her job well, being a wonderful family ship for all of the family, with lots of happy memories from all our trips, and she is now waiting for the next owner to love and take care of her.
